The NGO was very impressed with the program and
would like to have artists working in other communities with their
ongoing programs in other parts of Guatemala.
The art exhibition I organized was an excellent
means to both evaluate and promote the use of art within the community.
Many women weavers who participated in the exhibition were encouraged
to discuss the possibility of running a weaving cooperative or opening
a store in the town center to promote more economic possibilities for
their families. Neighboring artists also visited the exhibition to gain
new ideas and inspirations in their own artistic practices.
I trained many teachers, adults and youth. I ran
workshops specifically for teachers and encouraged interested community
members to participate in running and assisting in workshops.
I gained new friends and improved upon my Spanish
language skills. I learned about another culture and people. This has
made a life-long impact upon my thinking and outlook. Living in
Guatemala gave me an insight into others' lives which in turn gave me a
deep insight into my own life and priorities. I learned to live a more
humble and simplistic life and appreciate some of the freedom that
comes with it. It was hard to leave some of the people I met and the
sense of belonging I felt.
My experience and research in Guatemala will have
a long lasting impact upon my future life choices and the type of art
that I produce.
The most difficult obstacle I had to overcome was
my language skills. I overcame my shortcomings in this area by taking
lessons prior to starting the project as well as taking lessons during
the project in the neighboring town.
It is important not to take yourself too seriously
or only frustrations arise.
I felt lucky to have such a down-to-earth and
motivated group of people with whom to work.
Cold showers were easily overcome, but I always
dreamed of a more comfortable bed.
ArtCorps is an excellent concept and I feel very
lucky to be one of the first volunteers to participate in the project.
Most definitely I would do it again. I would have
stayed for another 6 months. I like the flexible nature of the program.
I would strongly recommend this program to a
motivated person with enthusiasm but also caution the person to be
flexible and willing to adjust their preconceived ideas of an intended
outcome for the 6-month program.
Lastly, I would like to thank Artcorps for
sponsoring the program and for giving me an opportunity to work with a
wonderful group of people. It was an excellent opportunity to help
people while I was expanding upon my artistic experiences.
Muchas gracias por todo.
