Values, Mission and Goals of ArtCorps

Our Values
  • Arts and culture have the power to transcend communication barriers and inspire local communities to be active agents of change.
  • Arts and culture are tools to build a sustainable and peaceful world.
  • Art accesses all of the senses and speaks to multiple types of intelligence, encourages critical thinking, and helps us imagine new possibilities.
  • Art opens people's imaginations to allow them to envision the kind of world they'd like to live in and the communities they'd like to create.
  • Arts and culture are powerful messengers

Our Mission

ArtCorps advances social change initiatives by promoting arts and culture as powerful tools to generate cooperative and sustainable work between development organizations and the communities they serve.

ArtCorps is a dynamic young organization using the arts to advance social change initiatives in developing countries. Each year, ArtCorps sends volunteer professional artists to work with Central American development organizations with established environmental, public health and human rights programs. During their year placements, the artists introduce the arts as an effective methodology for community empowerment and engagement, educating and inspiring people to participate actively in improving the environmental, health, and social conditions in their communities.

Our Goals

  • To empower communities to build stronger, more peaceful societies by training NGOs to use participatory arts as a strategy for outreach, education and engagement in their programs.
  • To perpetuate the use of participatory art as an innovative tool for empowering and educating communities among non-governmental organizations (NGO) and international funders.
  • Within 3-5 years of partnership, ArtCorps seeks to build the organizational capacity within both the NGOs (trained staff) and communities (local artists) to continue to use the participatory arts for social action after the artists leave.
  • To create opportunities for artists to use art to catalyze social and environmental change.
