Spanish artist Caterina Almirall Rotés practices a wide range of disciplines including drawing, painting, sculpture and installation. Drawing is a basic form of expression for Caterina, because with paper and pencil she can express the way she sees and understands the world, which is unique for each person at each moment. On paper, she is able to describe the way she relates one thing to another, which is completely subjective to her experience. Caterina feels the same can be done with a piece of clay or a brush. Recently graduated from the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, Caterina has a postgraduate degree in Drawing.
Caterina has worked in collectives and artistic working groups, which has furthered her interest in the creative process and group dynamics of artist collectives. She has also over 5 years experience as a visual arts teacher for children of all ages and as a Girl Scout leader. During her time as a Scout leader, Caterina learned about the values of teamwork, solidarity and environmentalism. Her artistic works, both in school and post-graduation, have almost always been collaborative pieces, as Caterina finds this to be the most gratifying and productive way to work. As an arts teacher, her challenge has been to foster creativity in children, even in those students who don’t believe in their abilities, by demonstrating to them that everyone has creative abilities that can be expressed.
“I believe in art, and I believe that without art the world would be very different. I believe that art, besides being a tool for expression, is a decisive tool in the processes of social change. I believe in its capacity to transmit messages, and I believe that it can help many people.”
