Monica Gutierrez, a Canadian/Colombian multi-media artist, works in a multitude of disciplines including animation, documentary film, lithography, silkscreen and painting. She works mostly in digital media, as Monica feels it is a more effect medium to share, communicate and distribute information, but also uses traditional techniques such as silkscreen to disseminate ideas. She draws inspiration from her own identity, exploring the Latin American Diaspora in Canada and the stories hidden in their journeys.
For Monica, art is a political medium that has much room and potential to transform realities. As an undergraduate at York University in Toronto, she taught free workshops for youth in the most underprivileged areas of Toronto. Monica also held an internship in Nicaragua, working with a community based television network that serviced the area of the RAAN (Autonomous North Atlantic Region). Whether she is teaching community theatre, mural painting or dance, Monica sees art work as not only an individual process but also as a collective process. Her creativity, and her ability to empower her students to find their own creative process and inspiration, will be an asset as she works with AJAASSPIB in Honduras.
